August Update from the Kensels

Another email from my sister (Deb Kensel). Its crazy how much cars cost in Thailand, but import duties (designed to protect local manufacturers) cause the ridiculously high prices . . .

Hi! Just wanted to let you know that we did get a van (if you didn't hear it through Ruth or Dad). It is only 8 years old, older than we wanted, but in the price range that the Lord allowed us to have. It is a little over $8000 that we bought the van for. We'll have to do body work on it and put a newer engine in it and we already know we have to do some suspension work and new tires and we'll need to fix it inside also.

The odometer reads over 330,000 km about 201,000 miles. We are happy with the van. It is the lowest price for that year that Dan could find. Dan felt it was a little suspiciously low so he brought a mechanic to look it over before he bought it. Maybe it was low because it was in a little town outside of Chiang Mai.

With the money [PVC] gave and our $3500 we should be able to fix the van to be a reliable van. The new engine and tranny will cost $1750 roughly. To buy all the suspension stuff will be roughly $700 dollars. We need to take some rust and dents out and repaint it and that will be roughly $300. Tires are $250. So that is the saga on the van. We appreciate [PVC's]gift and want you to know it is a real blessing to have a reliable second vehicle. Even with spending the extras we are going to have a very good van for cheaper than buying a newer van. Think, 4-5 year old van are $14,000+, it is incredible, the prices. We will send you a used car magazine with prices so you can get a better idea of the deal we got

In other news, we still don't have a baby. Dan spent a lot of our time waiting looking into vans, but he is also getting our computers fixed up and putting in some time with the field helper in Discourse Analysis in preparation for writing lessons and materials for believers and evangelism. [ . . . ]

Boys are fine. We are just doing a little math most days and not much else in schooling. They'll get a complete break when the baby comes.

We are still thinking about the video and are in no ways put off from doing it. We are just wondering though, being up here in Chiang Mai it would just be us in a house looking at the camera and giving a verbal update. Is that what you want? Or we can wait in three weeks and be back in Karen land and give you something more. But whatever you want - we want to do what you think is good for the people that are supporting us at your church. We are willing to do whatever you want but just want to know specifically what would be best. (We would look at your old email, but that is on the computer at home. If you gave some specifics on that, sorry if you have to restate it.)

Love, Deb (and Dan and boys &?)
